All objects on the site are mapped during site measuring. These can be trees, but also light poles, water courses, shrubs and so on.<\/p>\n<p>All of these objects can affect the design of the construction project and therefore the final outcome of the construction project.<\/p>\n<p>The impact may relate to shape or position. But the objects can also have financial consequences.<\/p>\n<p>It is therefore important to map all objects on the construction project site.<\/p>\n<p>Another important part of site surveying is measuring the elevations of the site. Of course, the construction project must match the existing situation. Therefore, when measuring the terrain, one measures the boundaries properly. One then focuses especially on the connections.<\/p>\n<p>Measuring the elevations of the site is also important. From this height measurement, one can determine the floor level or road level. For example, it is difficult to determine direction with a measuring tape. Also, one cannot determine coordinates with a measuring tape. The data obtained with a measuring tape is analog, making it difficult to use the results for digital design, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, analog measurement data determined with a measuring tape can be digitized. However, this is an extra step, making it not really cost-effective.<\/p>\n<h3>Land surveying with GPS<\/h3>\n<p>GPS can be used to do a lot these days. Of course, there is navigation. But GPS is also widely used today for surveying work. And surveying sites is, of course, one of those surveying activities.<\/p>\n<p>GPS allows you to determine position with centimeter accuracy. And that, of course, is what you want when surveying a site.<\/p>\n<p>The good thing about GPS is that the results are immediately available digitally. It is also ideal that the results are immediately in the correct coordinate system. For the Netherlands, this is of course RDNAPTRANS2018.<\/p>\n<h3>Measuring with a drone<\/h3>\n<p>Nowadays terrains are also measured with a drone. All points found are related to ground points or base points. These points are often measured with GPS so that the scanned points can be set to coordinates.<\/p>\n<p>Measuring with a drone is fast. But it is not yet allowed everywhere. Moreover, measuring with a drone is a job for specialists.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the best way to measure a site?<\/h2>\n<p>Above, I described three ways to measure a terrain. The question of what is the best way to measure a terrain is a difficult one. This has to do with the fact that the best way depends on the purpose and on the terrain.<\/p>\n<p>If surveying the site is only about determining the distance from, say, a tree to a shed, then using a measuring tape will suffice.<\/p>\n<p>However, an altitude measurement of open terrain cannot be done with a tape measure. It can be done with a drone. This is also probably the fastest method to perform an altitude measurement.<\/p>\n<p>But a drone may not be flown everywhere. Consider, for example, proximity to airports or where there are a lot of people present. There are regulations for flying drones, and therefore also for surveying terrains with drones. These regulations are there to prevent accidents.<\/p>\n<p>GPS surveying has far fewer limitations than measuring with drones or a measuring tape. It is quick to set up. So even if it is just for a single point you can use a GPS measurement system well.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, measuring with GPS has advantages. The person measuring with GPS sees exactly what he or she is measuring. This allows obstacles to be found that would go unnoticed with a drone, for example.<\/p>\n<p>In general, the best way to survey a terrain is the method using GPS surveying equipment. However, there are situations where other ways may work faster.<\/p>\n<h2>Can you measure a site yourself?<\/h2>\n<p>Measuring a terrain with a tape measure is not that difficult. But measuring with a drone requires some knowledge and skill.<\/p>\n<p>However, measuring with GPS can be done well by yourself if the software you use is Apglos Survey Wizard. And by direct I mean also directly. Measuring a terrain really doesn't mean much anymore. With layers you can indicate what you are measuring. And the buttons are self-explanatory.<\/p>\n<p>The land surveying software Apglos Survey Wizard is very intuitive. And it allows you to do everything you need to do terrain surveying.<\/p>\n<p>You can measure point objects, such as trees, light poles and sewer manholes. But you can also measure line objects, such as curbs.<\/p>\n<p>The options also include measuring arcs, polylines and planes.<\/p>\n<p>Since this is all in the simple surveying app Apglos Survey Wizard, I can say with certainty that you can survey a terrain with our GPS surveying equipment.<\/p>\n<h2>What results do you get from a site survey?<\/h2>\n<p>The result of a terrain survey can vary. It depends on what the purpose of the terrain measurement is.<\/p>\n<p>A well-known term for the result of a terrain survey is a digital terrain model. This creates a model of the elevations of the terrain. Using a digital terrain model, one can use software such as Civil 3D to determine volumes quickly and easily. And one can see how much soil needs to be excavated or brought in.<\/p>\n<p>A DTM is often used in large projects, such as highway construction.<\/p>\n<p>For smaller projects, there are other ways to present the result properly. If one wants to use the terrain survey to later design on one's own then a DXF file is a good result. A DXF can be opened in any drawing program, such as AutoCAD and Microstation.<\/p>\n<p>These drawing programs can then be used to base the design on the site survey.<\/p>\n<h2>Final conclusion on terrain surveying<\/h2>\n<p>This was a whole article on terrain surveying.
