To know how an RTK signal, subscription-free or otherwise, works, you need to know how GPS surveying works. GPS surveying involves many abbreviations. First, of course, there is already GPS. That stands for Global Positioning System. This means that position can be determined anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n
This requires GPS receivers. GPS receivers capture satellite signals and convert them to a position. Only a GPS receiver itself does nothing with this position. This position the GPS receiver must communicate with another device. And in this case with the surveying app Apglos Survey Wizard.<\/p>\n
This communication from the GPS receiver is done in NMEA. NMEA is the abbreviation of National Marine Electronics Association. NMEA represents the communication protocol of GPS receivers.<\/p>\n

Therefore, Apglos Survey Wizard sends the position data via a GGA line to the RTK correction network. In this network, it looks at which fixed base station the position is closest to. And from that base station, the data is sent to Apglos Survey Wizard. This data is sent in RTCM. RTCM is Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services.<\/p>\n
This is a protocol to communicate base station information. However, this protocol concerns only the messages.<\/p>\n
How it is sent from the network to Apglos Survey Wizard or any other device or software package is again done through a different protocol. This is NTRIP. NTRIP is Networked Transport or RTCM over Internet Protocol.<\/p>\n
After Apglos Survey Wizard receives this RTK signal, this surveying app transmits it to the GPS receiver. This allows the GPS receiver to determine the position more accurately. And when this position is determined to the nearest centimeter then there is an RTK or a fix. RTK stands for Real Time Kinematic.<\/p>\n
And so to obtain this position with centimeter accuracy requires an RTK signal, subscription-free or otherwise.<\/p>\n
When should you choose a subscription-free RTK signal and when should you choose a subscription?<\/h2>\n
So it is quite possible to work with a subscription-free RTK signal. A subscription-free RTK signal is just as good and accurate as a subscription RTK signal. There is no difference in quality. At least not if the RTK signal comes from the same supplier, but more on that later.<\/p>\n
Quality is not a criteria of choice in the choice between subscription-free RTK signal and RTK signal subscription.<\/p>\n
Actually, there is only one choice criteria. And that is how often to measure. The tipping point is about 40 times measurement in a year. And then for times you should actually read days.<\/p>\n
If you measure less than 40 days in a year and do want to have control over the planning and quality of your measurements, a subscription-free RTK signal with Apglos Survey Wizard is recommended.<\/p>\n
But if you measure more than 40 days in a year then you would be wise to look at our subscription form. Our subscription form is a combination of an annual license of Apglos Survey Wizard together with RTK corrections and an optional SIM card.<\/p>\n
Are there alternatives to a subscription-free RTK signal?<\/h2>\n
So, as described, the tipping point is at 40 days of measurement. I have assumed a subscription fee of \u20ac 1500,- excl. VAT for the RTK corrections.<\/p>\n
There are now a number of parties offering the subscription for a lower amount. The quality of these RTK corrections does not equal the RTK corrections of parties, such as 06-GPS. The base stations of respected parties, such as 06-GPS and LNR, are certified by the Land Registry.<\/p>\n
Other parties do offer RTK corrections, but from base stations, which are not certified. This can work, but there is a greater chance that the deviation from your measurements is greater than you think. This is because the Land Registry has not checked the coordinates of the base stations.<\/p>\n
In addition, parties such as 06-GPS and LNR have good national coverage with a good spread across the country. The latter is very important.<\/p>\n
The greater the distance between the point you want to measure and the nearest base station, the greater the potential deviation from the measured point.<\/p>\n
And surveying in general, but especially GPS surveying, is all about accuracy. That is why we ourselves only work with parties, who have certified their base stations.<\/p>\n
