There are many different uses for a GPS system. Of course, there is GPS navigation. But GPS systems are also used for surveying, autonomously piloted vehicles, tracking, etc. And while these applications all have different functions, they all use a GPS receiver. Major advantages of a GPS system are that it is easily applicable and can be used anywhere in the world. So if you want to test with an accurate system, check out this page.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a GPS system?<\/h2>\n<p>It is impossible to imagine today's society without a GPS system. In fact, in everything where position is important, people use GPS systems.<\/p>\n<p>The meaning of GPS is Global Positioning System. In Dutch, this is Globaal PositiebepalingsSysteem. So the term GPS system is actually a bit ambiguous. In fact, system is used twice.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, a GPS system determines one's position on the world. For this purpose, the world is divided into degrees. This allows a GPS system to give a position for each position on the earth. The GPS system does this in a latitude, a longitude and an altitude. Other terms for this are latitude, longitude and altitude.<\/p>\n<p>The latitude goes from the north pole to the south pole. The maximum value of the latitude is 90\u02da. This is at the north pole. And the minimum value of the latitude is -90\u02da. This value is then the south pole.<\/p>\n<p>With longitude, things are slightly different. Here the world is divided into 360\u02da. The zero point of the longitude, used by a GPS system lies in England through the town of Greenwich. In a GPS system, this is 0\u02da. To the east, the longitude is positive. In the Netherlands, the longitude is thus about +4\u02da.<\/p>\n<p>However, sometimes you may encounter a negative longitude. In fact, a negative longitude is also used. To arrive at a positive longitude, you only need to add 360\u02da degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, more and more applications of a GPS system are showing the direction of both latitude and longitude. This does make everything a lot clearer.<\/p>\n<h2>What applications of a GPS system are there?<\/h2>\n<p>A GPS system is a very broad term. There are many applications of GPS systems. Below are some common applications.<\/p>\n<h3>Navigation<\/h3>\n<p>Of course, one of the most widely used applications of GPS navigation. With your phone, you can navigate with Google Maps, for example. But most cars now have navigation built in with GPS.<\/p>\n<p>The position, determined from GPS, is displayed on a map. And when the final destination is then known, the GPS system calculates the route.<\/p>\n<p>This allows you to drive to any place, where you want, without problems. This at least when there are no road closures.<\/p>\n<h3>Land surveying<\/h3>\n<p>Another application is surveying. The new structure must fit and connect to the existing situation.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, surveying is done for every construction project. Today, surveying with a GPS system is the most commonly used solution for that.<\/p>\n<p>Using such a system, position can be determined to the nearest centimeter. GPS equipment for surveying is thus more accurate than that of navigation. Thus, the accuracy of a GPS system depends on the application.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to surveying with a GPS system for land surveying, one can also stake out with such a system. Pickets are then placed at the exact position so that the contractor can build the project at the correct position.<\/p>\n<h3>GPS for on a tractor<\/h3>\n<p>There are GPS systems for on tractors. Positioning is therefore of enormous importance for the proper functioning of a GPS system on a tractor.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, developments in autonomous driving continue. When a tractor is driving in the field, there are few external factors. And the external factors, such as other vehicles and people, are subject to influence.<\/p>\n<p>That is not the case when one wants cars to drive independently. Then there are many other factors. And the risks are great. An autonomous driving car, of course, must not cause a collision.<\/p>\n<p>So the GPS system for autonomous driving is not a simple system. This system must have been developed much further than those for navigation, for example.<\/p>\n<h3>GPS tracking<\/h3>\n<p>Then there is GPS tracking. For many different things, people want to know where they are.<\/p>\n<p>This can be for a truck so that it can be recovered if stolen. The same, of course, applies to other expensive items.<\/p>\n<p>But there are also GPS trackers for people with dementia. When they have a GPS tracker with them and can't find their way back, they can be found.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true for pets. There are now collars with a GPS tracker. If the dog or cat has disappeared then one can search for the pet using the position transmitted by the GPS tracking system.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the components of a GPS system?<\/h2>\n<p>As you can see, there are several applications of a GPS system. And they all do something different. But they also have a commonality. After receiving the satellite signals, the antenna sends them to the small computer. The size of the antenna is important. The bigger the antenna is the more satellite signals the antenna can receive. And the more satellite signals the GPS receiver has, the more accurate the position can be determined.<\/p>\n<p>The computer in the GPS receiver calculates the position from the satellite signals, which the antenna has transmitted. To do this, the computer uses the formula<\/p>\n<p>R<sup>2<\/sup>=(Xo-Xs)<sup>2<\/sup>+(Yo-Ys)<sup>2<\/sup>+(Zo-Zs)<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In this formula, R (the radius) is the known, because due to the satellite signal, the distance from the satellite to the antenna is known. Because of this, there are three unknowns. The computer calculates these, but needs enough satellite signals to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The GPS receiver's computer communicates the calculated position to the part of the GPS system, where the position is eventually processed. This then depends on the application.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the entire GPS receiver cannot function without a power supply. The power supply provides power for the computer and antenna.<\/p>\n<p>The other components of a GPS system depend on the application. For example, when surveying, the following components are needed in addition to the GPS receiver:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lead rod<\/li>\n<li>Tablet<\/li>\n<li>Survey software Apglos Survey Wizard<\/li>\n<li>Tablet Holder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How does a GPS system work?<\/h2>\n<p>So the GPS receiver is an important part of the GPS system. So it captures satellite signals as explained above.<\/p>\n<p>Only, not all satellite signals are the same. Not all satellites floating around the earth are for the purpose of positioning. But a number of satellite constellations (or groups) are. These are GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO and BEIDOU.<\/p>\n<p>The satellites of these groups all send a signal, which a GPS receiver, upon receiving enough signals, can convert to a position.<\/p>\n<p>So the signal from satellites is important to determine position. Such a positioning satellite actually says \u201cNow I am here\u201d every time.<\/p>\n<p>So that includes a time. And because the time of transmission is received and compared with the time of reception in the GPS receiver, the length of time that the satellite signal was in transit can be determined.<\/p>\n<p>So when the time duration is known and the speed of the signal is a \u201cconstant\u201d then the GPS receiver knows the distance between the satellite and the GPS receiver. And so that is the R from the formula:<\/p>\n<p>R<sup>2<\/sup>=(Xo-Xs)<sup>2<\/sup>+(Yo-Ys)<sup>2<\/sup>+(Zo-Zs)<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The position of the satellite is then expressed in Xs, Ys and Zs. This leaves three unknowns. With enough satellite signals, the GPS receiver can resolve these three unknowns and determine the position of the GPS receiver.<\/p>\n<p>So that's how the GPS system works.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the disadvantages of a GPS system?<\/h2>\n<p>However then we immediately see a drawback. The satellite signal passes through the atmosphere. And in the atmosphere, the speed of the satellite signal is not constant. That is also a reason why it takes more than three satellite signals to determine an exact position.<\/p>\n<p>And even then, it's not that accurate. Depending on the application, it depends on whether the accuracy is sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>In surveying applications, for example, centimeter accuracy is necessary. This cannot be achieved with a GPS receiver alone. Therefore, when surveying with GPS, a correction is also required. This correction, in which the results compare the GPS receiver at a fixed point with the GPS receiver in the field, ensures that measurements can be made with centimeter accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>Another disadvantage is that GPS signals can be blocked by trees, tall buildings and the like. As may be evident from this article, sufficient satellite signals must be received by the GPS receiver. Obstructions can cause insufficient satellite signals to be received by the GPS receiver to determine position.<\/p>\n<h2>What advantages does a GPS system have?<\/h2>\n<p>But in addition to these disadvantages, there are many advantages. A GPS system is easy to use. In fact, all you have to do is turn on the system. There are few other settings. Although, of course, the latter depends on the application.<\/p>\n<p>In navigation, for example, you only need to set your destination. In addition, new positioning satellites are still being launched. And the more positioning satellites floating around the earth, the easier it becomes for a GPS receiver to receive enough satellite signals to determine its exact position.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, obstacles such as trees and tall buildings will have less and less impact on GPS systems.<\/p>\n<h2>Final conclusion on GPS system<\/h2>\n<p>This was a whole article about GPS system in general.
